TIGER Airways has cemented its place in the Australian airline market, launching its MelbourneAirport terminal today.
The redeveloped terminal four will handle up to two million domestic passengers a year when the carrier starts operating at the end of next month.
The terminal has three gates and five aircraft parking places after undergoing a $5 million-plus redevelopment in June.
Tiger Airways is a cut-price, Singapore-based airline and will offer domestic services between its Melbourne headquarters and eight interstate destinations, subject to federal government approval. Services will include Melbourne to Launceston, the Gold Coast, Rockhampton, Mackay, the Sunshine Coast, Alice Springs, Darwin and Perth.
The domestic schedule will link into Tiger's existing international services between Singapore, Darwin and Perth.
Victorian Industry and Trade Minister, Theo Theophanous, launched Tiger's new terminal today, saying the airline would generate 1,000 jobs and boost tourism.
“With its low fare structure, Tiger will grow the leisure market to Victoria, creating demand for new hotels and other investments and improving accessibility to major events such as the Spring Racing Carnival, the Australian Open Tennis and Formula One Grand Prix,” he said.
